Jan De Bont (pronounced "Yawn-Day-Bont) was a long time Hollywood cinematographer who was the director of photography for prominent films such as Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Basic Instinct and Lethal Weapon 3. Speed was his directorial debut and was a massive success. Twister was his follow up and was also a box office success. However his next 3 movies, Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997), The Haunting (1999), and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) were all panned by critics. Tomb Raider was so bad of a movie and his experience working on the film was so awful (dealing with the studio interfering with the production and direction of the film) that unfortunately he quit the film industry entirely.

I feel like when Melissa said she thought his chasing tornadoes was a metephore, she meant that she thought he was sitting in an office somewhere, or watching them on a screen somewhere nowhere near the actual tornado, as apposed to being right there alongside them. She thought he WATCHED them, and the word chase wasn't literal. She could have used the word figurative the same way.
