I mean they fabricated it pretty well, they mainly focused on the Allied Pirates, didn't really focus on Whitebeard or his Commander in the Bay. So when Akainu comes around and tells these lies that only the Allied Pirates get attacked and not Whitebeard because Whitebeard made a deal, it just looks very convincing when it's actually true from what it looks like. Combined with Squard weakness to Gol D Roger and Whitebeard not telling him that Ace is his son, even though he knew. Squard feels betrayed on multiple levels. And the Allied Pirates hear that and also realize "oh shit, only we get attacked here" and start to believe it to. It's a crazy dirty tactic, but it works when executed well. But yeah I never liked Squard either.
