I think that the threw away part is either a translation error or assumption of the guy. I doubt they have the exact details of what happened during the crash.

The threw away was probably more of an assumption, it was discarded/thrown away that was said so the translation is correct

Throwing away the paper seems pretty okay to me. I imagine it as: the plane they were in is literally about to crash and they didn't know if they'd survive, so they just removed the paper from the case ("threw away the paper") and put the stuffed bear in. Doubt they'd have had time to do much else.
