Summer heat and a music festival!

While we have Halloween in the fall, Japan has Obon in the summer. During Obon if the dead haven't been cared for or died in a violent way their spirits may return bearing grudges. Ghost stories were told in rural villages during this time, which was a custom adopted by Kabuki theatre, which then resulted in an association between summer and scary stories. Also because Japanese summers are very hot and humid they try and cool off by getting the chills from scary stories.
