Mother of Learning Chapter 64: Distance, a fantasy fiction | FictionPress

Eldemar and Koth were very far from one another. The exact distance was hard to pin down, since the name 'Koth' covered a pretty big area on the southern continent, but Zorian estimated it to be around 7000 kilometers minimum. Worse, this was a straight line distance, so the actual journey would be even longer.

Couldn't Zorian get comprehensive memory packets from his simulacra and then digest them while inside black rooms? Also, when his simulacrum was running out of money to bribe teleport mages, why didn't it call him and open a gate to retrieve more funds?

He could, but it would be unspeakably boring and waste a lot of time he could use on other things. The more comprehensive the memory packet, and the more closely he reviews them, the more time it uses up. The point was for the simulacrum to reach Koth with as little mana spent as possible, so opening Gates periodically wouldn't be in the spirit of the thing. And in any case, it wasn't the money that was the simulacrum's primary problem, so it would have only been of marginal help.

One of the best chapters in a long while. Many characters got developed, Zorian (or at least his simulcrun thing) did some traveling, lots of plans got made. And Zorian FINALLY learned what his clones had been doing behind his back! Had several questions for you. Assuming 26 chapters per story arc then that means there is a good chance you will finish this year or very early next year? What plans if any do you have for writing after this? Any more stories either based in another universe, or based on this one in Mother of Learning? Also, I think I messaged you once to thank you for writing this, and also asked if you would self-publish this. I would be very intrested in buying a copy. Don't think I have anything else other than how I love Zorian interacting with people in his class, his friends lik Tavien, and his teachers. Thought it could be a good idea of Zorian used his Simulcrun to do stuff like take private tutoring in foreign langauges, and increase his knolwedge of more mundane things, such as art classes. But really. I can see Zorian creating a telephone network via using mental magic relay stones and the mental voice projector he once used when the Army attacked Ikasu Mansion.

Can you explain a bit about teleporting and the limitations of teleport spells? Is there some limit to the distance a teleport can go? What prevents Zorian from chain teleporting great distances instead of using the transport relays. Is it simply lack of mana from using multiple teleport spells? One of the earlier chapters Zorian does the ritual to look for a marker and sees zach randomly teleporting around the continent far to the south only a short time after the restart begins. If mana is the primary limiter can zach and zorian take turns teleporting each other (obviously with zach taking more turns since his reserves are far higher).

Also curious about the limits of teleportation, I was under the impression he could teleport anywhere he had been before? In the chapters immediately following 'Soulkill' he just sort of wanders around and teleports to wherever he left off at the start of each restart - I think this is the first time any sort of distance limitation has been mentioned? All that aside I'm a little skeptical that he's sitting on a huge load of money in this big city of powerful wizards (many of which know him personally and are more or less willing to help) but somehow the best idea is 'pay 100 different random guys and hope for the best'. All that said enjoyed the chapter (especially the character building moments) looking forward to the next one as always.

7000km huh? You know, there are birds that can reach a pretty high horizontal flight speed. If zorian can use unstructured magic when in an animal form, he can make a slipstream in front of him as a bird, which could make sustained flight easier and faster. Say he can hit an average of 50km/h for 10 hours per day, thats 14 days of flying. That is half a month. Considering say a grey headed albatross can hit a max speed of about 127km/h that sounds pretty optimistic. Plus if a simulcrum can use the transformation potion (which is questionable) he could use periodic gate checkpoints. Plus he could use the portal spell checkpoints to switch simulcrums to a fresh one for a direct sustained flight. 24 hours a day of flight at even 50km per hour thats 1200km per day, about a week total allowing for leeway

>Assuming 26 chapters per story arc Yeah, that's the general idea. Might be a bit more for this arc, but this is what I'm aiming for. >What plans if any do you have for writing after this? I'm always having ideas for more stories, though actually making a write-up is more difficult. Still, I intent to keep writing after I finish MoL. It will probably be something completely different, though - I have an idea for a sort of 'extra MoL arc' that has no real plot and focuses mostly on the aftermath of the story proper, but I'm uncertain when and if I'll actually write that. >...and also asked if you would self-publish this. I intend to leave publishing aside until after I finish the story. After that, I will investigate the viability of that and make a decision how (and if) to proceed with it.

I'm really surprised that so many people thought teleport has no range limitations. I don't know if I ever stated it outright, but I have implied it many, many times in the story that the cost increases with distance. Zorian notes so when discussing the invader gate setup, people chain teleports all the time instead of simply teleporting to the destination outright, and so on. There are no powerful mages in Cyoria who have traveled to Koth by personally chaining teleports to the destination. And even if there were, they'd run out of mana after a handful of jumps and would then have to wait for their reserves to regenerate. By constantly switching mages, the simulacrum is basically exchanging an exhausted carrier for a fresh one, allowing him to continue rapidly jumping forward.

nobody103

Of course there is a distance limit - the mana cost of the teleport goes up as the distance increases. The chapter you're referencing says Zach teleported southward, but doesn't specify the distance. In fact, the detection spell couldn't even reach southern Altazia, so if Zach had went there Zorian wouldn't have been able to find with the spell. Zach and Zorian could potentially take turns teleporting each other. However, mana costs increases the more people are being teleported. They would spend a lot of time recovering mana. Additionally, Zach cannot create a simulacrum, so if he leaves for Koth, he won't be able to work with Zorian back in Cyoria or enter the Black Rooms.

Thanks for the chapter, I laughed a lot during it (and it was awesome to feel this)
