I agree that Stefan is being an ass, but I think it's consistent with his character. In 1864, when faced with the possibility of losing Damon, he forced Damon to become a vampire against his will. At the end of season 2, when Damon was dying, Stefan volunteered to become a serial killer working for Klaus to save his life. As much as there have been times when Stefan has hated Damon, the idea of losing him has never been something Stefan has dealt with in anything close to a healthy manner. I guess it just makes sense to me that, now that Stefan thinks he really has lost Damon for good, he wouldn't handle that very well either.
