Hello all!

Apologies if I'm bombarding your inbox recently (can you tell I'm working from home?), but after our recent Booster Asset Theme poll you all surprised me by coming out with some strong support for the Spell Assets pack, one I had actually just kind of tacked on there as an afterthought.

Since then I've been tinkering away trying to experiment with different approaches to the best way to visualize these assets. They're a little different than anything I've made before and potentially even more functional as you'll be using them to mark perimeters for spell effects, attack ranges, etc.

As of right now, I'm planning on releasing this in 2 parts: the first containing more universal markers of various categories (circles, cones, squares, and projectiles) in a series of different magical 'flavors' (fire, ice, nature, etc.). The second part will contain more specific spell assets pertaining to unique spells, but could still be used in lots of circumstances (e.g. Bigby's Hand or Wall of Ice).

Anyways, I'm trying to strike a balance between aesthetic sensibilities and pragmatism and I'm hoping you all can help! In the pack below I've attached a 'preview' of the flame-themed spell markers that I'd love if you downloaded and played around with if you have a moment. Let me know what you think, how they work for you, things that I can tweak, change, or get rid of entirely and I'll try to incorporate that feedback into the asset pack as it continues to take shape.

Thanks for your help!

I'd love to get this pack to come out well. So here's some simple constructive feedback: I don't like the fire pattern being on the edge. Instead you could, - (in some cases like the cone) make the fire come from one corner. (D&D Burning Hands spell?) - Have fire all over the AoE, but from a topdown perspective. - Experiment with pentagons inside the shape? Here are some other thoughts. - I think having shapes is nice, but i dont think the art should be restricted to the shape. - I hope that you will make assets for all the magical types in common tabletop RPGs. I'd love to see you go wild with things like Negative Energy, but more importantly, because it would be extremely useful for us. Everything I've written is with good intentions for hoping that you will improve the assets to make them better!! So i hope my feedback has been useful! I'm looking forward to seeing the next iteration

Thanks for the feedback! Will absolutely be doing this for all of the major magic types, this is just the first completed set I’ve got. I appreciate what you mean about not having the art constricted to a shape; do you feel there’s any risk to have edges be too indistinguishable to the point that it doesn’t serve as a marker anymore? I.E. it becomes to amorphous to effectively communicate where the game mechanics say it should stop/start

Hmm. One idea could be that you make 2 versions (just like how you do shadow/no-shadow versions), one could have a semi-transparent overlay of the shape on top of the artwork, and the other could not have that. How does that sound?

As for me personally, I DM on roll20, so i'd love to be able to pull out some sweet looking spell AoE's whenever spells are cast, instead of having colored circles. With the tools that virtual tabletops have, i wouldn't care much if the edges are too indistinguishable because it can easily be measured in just a second. But I'm not sure how other people would go about using these on an actual tabletop setup.

If you want to go the extra mile, with the same drive you had when you made pretty much every magic item in D&D, you could go through all the spells and make artwork for the ones that have AoE's. It sounds like a lot of work, but it could be a really awesome thing if it is done.

I agree with the semi transparent suggestion from Tsumi. The spells will cover over characters and I want to be able to see map assets below so that characters don’t accidentally try to walk through a bookcase or something because the spell is blocking the view. I’d also like to see a little more contrast in colour between the central ‘white hot’ fire compared to the orange flames around the edges. I realise that it’s important to show the edge but I think that you could show off a little flair with the creative design on these. Super excited to start using these!

I'm thinking of the various spell effects I hope to see implemented; elementalism (Fire, Cold, Water, Ice, Earth, Stone, Light, Dark, Air, Force, Magma), in it's various effects (Bolt, Ball, Wall 10'x3', Ring (10' or 20' diameter, hollow in center), Cube (10x10x10), Tentacle, Hand, Arm, Whip, Sword, Staff. The latter three are almost magic items since they have to be wielded but they're still spell effects. I probably forgot something, lol, but that's the list that comes to mind

venatusmaps

Yes! For sure; sorry I don't think I was very clear in the post (I've since edited it). I'm planning on releasing a bunch of 'magical flavors' like you describe in their various effects, followed by a set of more unique spell effects. So I think we're on the same page!

venatusmaps

They are definitely semi-transparent (as you'll see in the preview pack) aside from the projectiles--are you saying you'd like them to be more transparent? And when you mention the 'white hot' element, are you referring to the AoE markers or the projectiles?

Any particular reason for the odd sizes on the larger ones? The 5' circle is 300x300, then 601x601, 1201x1201, ... and so on. The triangles are 449x447, 899x897,...? The squares seem to have been done at 150px/grid square instead of the 300 used by the others. Love the streaking fireballs!

venatusmaps

I can make the sizes more uniform if that affects usage, they were just made by hand in Photoshop--squares were done on the same ratio grid as the others so I'm not sure why they would appear any differently (they don't on my end)

Phergus

Some VTT programs will force images to the nearest grid multiple and others won't. They are all simple enough to fix. re: squares - if the intent was for all to be at 150 px/grid then the sizes indicated by the names of the circles are radius and not diameter. Easy enough to adjust.

venatusmaps

Ah I understand the confusion--I had labeled the circles by their radius as that is how they are referred to in their spell descriptions. Makes perfect sense that they'd lead to misunderstandings like yours; I'll relabel the circles and include that in the read me. Thanks Phil!
