With this project, I wanted to try something different and create a complete graphic novel of the series. By incorporating text and dialogue, I aimed to deepen the storyline and provide more insight into the characters. Sounds simple enough, but the task turned out to be more elaborate and time-consuming than expected.
I usually work with a very general idea for a story. This allows me to explore different possibilities and let the characters shape the plot along the way. The best ideas often come while working on a scene. But in this case, to keep the narrative consistent, I needed to plan the plot and think the characters through more carefully beforehand.
What I also did not realize beforehand, was that some parts of the Gallery - the section with only images - made little sense without the additional text. Some parts of the images just support the descriptions or dialog.
Piecing the pages of the graphic novel together also took far more time than expected. Apart from adding text and balloons to the images, I often had to consider how to position the characters beforehand and leave enough space in the image to insert the dialog. The page layout, font, and text balloons were inspired by the classic comics of Blake and Mortimer.
Characters
The main character of the series is Jack Hammer, commonly known as the Jackhammer, for obvious reasons. He’s a rough dominant top who never bottoms. His features, bulky physique, and cocky attitude are loosely based on Alan Ritchson as Reacher, in the TV series based on the novels by Lee Child. The former special force officer in this story is hired as a mercenary for a special and very dangerous task: to find a laboratory and destroy the prototype for a groundbreaking weapon. Although he’s highly quilted for a special operation like this one, he takes it easy and enjoys himself whenever possible.
His unlikely partner in this adventure is a very different character, a young unassuming programmer, simply known as Chen. His background remains undefined, but it’s clear from the start that he’s more than meets the eye. Jack doesn’t like to be saddled with a partner for this mission, but he slowly warms to the presence of his new companion. After all, opposites attract.
Setting
The stage of this series is a gloomy dystopian world on the brink of another war, in a bleak distant future. We return to the world of the Predator, where cities lay in ruins and armies must fight to keep their ground against dark and creepy forces.
The overview gives some idea of the main models used for this project.
Test Renders
Although the characters and most of the settings are based on existing models, it can take several days to get them ready for use. Many test renders are needed to be sure that everything is in place. Many adjustments can be made while working on the scenes, but the characters must be completed from the start.
