Some other sci-fi video game type films that I would recommend watching are: WarGames (1983; very grounded sci-fi; Starring Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy; was actually nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards that year) and The Last Starfighter (1984 starring Lance Guest and Robert Preston).

The movie is okay/good for people who haven't read the books. But for me it felt mostly like a soulless nostalgia grab. They changed the tests and challenges and just gutted the entire book only to take what was the flashiest for the big screen. Basically erased everything from the real world, the stuff they had wasn't even in the book, changed everybody's history and backstory to the simplest form they could. Just bleh to me. But as I said, that was just me. Was hoping for better from someone of Spielberg's caliber.
