Great reaction and discussion! A couple things: As much as I love and adore the first live-action Transformers film, Michael Bay never had any reverence for the Transformers lore. He basically kept agreeing to make them because then the studio would greenlight and finance his smaller projects that he wanted to make. I really enjoy Michael Bay as a filmmaker when his heart is in the subject matter (See 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi from 2016). He would be more suited for G.I. Joe, given his respect for the military. Honestly, I think Transformers probably works best in animation. The 1986 animated film was fantastic as you saw. That movie was released between seasons 2 and 3 of the original cartoon. I recommend watching the 3-part pilot mini-series,"More Than Meets the Eye." A couple other TF recommendations: Transformers: Prime(2010 animated series with a similar animation style to Clone Wars and Rebels), in my opinion is the best iteration of Transformers(and I'm a diehard G1 fan). Another great series to check out from Netflix is Transformers: War for Cybertron trilogy(Seige, Earthrise,and Kingdom, each being 6 episodes), it takes place mainly on Cybertron(no humans!) and is like are telling of the original animated series. Going forward with the live-action films, I recommend really lowering your expectations for Transformers 4 and 5, but once you get through them, Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts are real treats. The Bay film continuity ends with 5 (The Last Knight), Bumblebee is a reboot of the film series and Rise of the Beasts is a direct sequel to Bumblebee.
