Growing up, I actually got to go on field trips to Middleton Place and Cypress Gardens (which is where a bulk of the swamp footage was taken). They actually did an overlay of the actual Downtown area, since a lot of these types of houses still stand. They actually left the set pieces at Cypress so you can see them when doing canoe rides in the swamp.
