Yaayy! I’m so happy to finally see this up! Such a timeless classic and Julie Andrews is everything 😍. Can’t wait to watch along later this evening c: If you guys are interested in some other classic musical movies, then I’d suggest The King & I (1956) and South Pacific (1958) :)

Kristin Carter

We definitely need My Fair Lady (1964) with Audrey Hepburn and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) with Marilyn Monroe

One of my favorite comfort movies. I much prefer the movie to the stage production (I just think the pacing is so much better in the movie but that's just me). When I was in Austria, it was winter so it wasn't quite the same but I found a field to sing The Sound of Music in and it was the most magical feeling I've ever had. Also I'd love to see you do a Streisand musical like Hello Dolly or Funny Girl

Leah Kotlarchyk

I have a great memory of this musical. I studied abroad in Scotland at the end of my Senior year of High School. My exchange sister was in The Sound of Music for the school play. It was a good performance but I will never forget the line, "I'm not a German! I'm an Austrian!", spoken in an extremely thick Scottish brogue.

I have always loved this movie, however, it has started to mean a lot more to me in the past couple years. My girlfriend’s grandmother is native to Austria, and it makes the movie very special to watch knowing that she has lived in and been to many of the cities and areas they mention.

jay luna

This is one of the first movies I have memories watching, my mom was a huge musical fan and adores Julie Andrews. So excited to watch this later and hear your thoughts on it!

really hope you guys get around to doing the 2007 hairspay movie, one of my fav musicals

Heidi Elizabeth Marcum

Then you really ought to watch West Side Story next. It’s fabulous!! And I highly recommend my all time favorite musical... Singin’ in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, The King and I, and The Music Man, etc...

jonathan Edge

I would suggest My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins . Two Hitchcock films Psycho and Rebecca(1940 original film not the remake) . Hopefully , people will see that Old Hollywood is just as important as New Hollywood .

Chael

I would suggest Seven Brides for Seven Brothers if you’re looking for classics. It’s highly entertaining & has good points for discussion as well. But any older musical is a great experience in my opinion & I look forward to whatever you react to.

Rosielauren xo

Not a classic but please watch bridgerton!! If you loved pride and prejudice you need to! X

DelGuy03

Yes, this was filmed on location in Salzburg, Austria -- then they moved back to Hollywood to shoot interiors. Definitely do West Side Story and The Music Man (two great and very different musicals from the same season on Broadway).

Alex Romanov

This movie was based off a memoir called The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, which was written by Maria Von Trapp (Julie Andrew's character). The movie actually briefly shows the real Maria in the beginning during the Confidence In Me song.

Effie

So glad you guys finally got around to watching this! - I love the classics because the singing and the dancing is always top tier. This film is pure nostalgia...the songs, the scenery and the children are just adorable! There's a charm about this film that is just so wholesome as you said. Please, please watch more true classics like this and other films such as Hitchcock. I know some people have mentioned that in the live streams as well.....we do exist 😅 There is a ton of "expert filmmaking" in older films, you'd be surprised. Great reaction guys! :)

Fritz

I believe this was my first non Disney musical as kid. I always loved it but I don't think I ever appreciated just how well done it really is. the cinematography is wonderful and who doesn't love those sweeping helicopter shots. You can bet that as a kid I was obsessed with the idea of going to Austria because of this movie. What I really noticed this time around was how much I liked the dialogue. I for one am totally down for more old movies. I grew up on the old stuff so I've always had a love for the classics.

Kayleigh McRae

Funfact this movie is based on a real life family. In fact, the real life Maria. Is shown passing by shopping during the filming of the "DoRaMi" song part. She's in the background and is gone before you can blink. But it's a fun detail. My source is Oprah. She had the VonTrapp family (next generation) come sing for her audience. I believe they were being interviewed? Anyways. It's a fun little fact about the movie. If I can find the time stamp I'll comment it.

jonathan Edge

I would also add the 70's , 80's , early 90's were also spectacular years with unforgettable films , directors , and performances that i would add to the Old period of cinema .

Kayleigh McRae

Whoops it was actually during 21:50 when Julie Andrews is going threw that gateway. If you watch the three ladies that come from the left. Those are Maria and her family.

Chloe

I'm so happy you reacted to this! This was the movie that I would come home and watch every day after school, it was a big part of my childhood. I would love to see you react to more musicals like this such as Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady as they are such classics. Love your guys' stuff!! :))

Anika

I definitely think you should react to My Fair Lady, Annie (1982), and maybe even Guys and Dolls.

WastedPo

I would love it if you reacted to MARY POPPINS right after this. It would be fun to watch you experience the "one two punch" of immortal Julie Andrews musicals. Also, it really is "practically perfect in every way." It's not just some dopey Disney movie that people like because of nostalgia. It's got amazing songs, inventive special effects (for the time) and beautiful hand-painted backgrounds. (I'm convinced that movies like Mary Poppins inspired THE GREATEST SHOWMAN to purposely go for the "stage look" for most of its backdrops.)

ALSO... I think we can all agree that watching Captain von Trapp rip a Nazi flag with his bare hands is one of the sexiest moments on film

Blobina Random

I don't know how many times i've seen this movie when i was little, my brother was a bit anoyed with me haha.. A classic i absolutly love and recomend you is "some like it hot", a Billy Wilder movie with Marylin Monroe, Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis. It's just perfectly splendid.

Anonymous

I would love for you to react to Hair spray but for more older classics I would also highly recommend Chitty Chitty Bang Bang & Singing In The Rain.

DelGuy03

Fun fact, one of the younger, more sympathetic nuns, Sister Sophia, is played by Marni Nixon, who had provided the singing for Audrey Hepburn (in Julie Andrews's original stage role) in My Fair Lady. She has said that she was nervous about meeting Julie Andrews, in case she might be resentful about it, but Andrews immediately put her at ease.

Trav Gorin

Haha, yes to this! I love Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I have always wondered whether a bit of stockholm syndrome had a part to play in this film. Lol

Trav Gorin

Annie is a great movie! (The '82 version anyway) So it should definitely be on their list!

Trav Gorin

I'd actually suggest The Birds by Hitchcock aswell. It's absolutely eerie!

Madelyn Lafferty

This is my favorite movie. I used to watch it over and over when I was younger. I believe the scene in the Gazebo with Maria and Captain Von Trapp was originally in the light but Julie Andrews kept giggling. I suggest fiddler on the roof that is one my favorite musicals.

Great Reaction!

Mike Dispo

113:20-113:23 Did y'all catch what Reverend Mother called Maria? (Hint: Listen with your eyes closed) How rude of her :D

DelGuy03

In answer to your question at the end: The whole ending is heavily dramatized. There wasn't a festival performance from which they snuck out. And they didn't hike into Switzerland, they took a train to Italy. (The real Maria Von Trapp once said, amused, "Didn't they look at a map?") Fiction is always cooler than reality, isn't it? :)

Johanna Wilson

Fun fact! The song Something Good had to be shot so dark because Julie Andrews kept laughing at the ridiculousness of singing that close to someone’s face 😂

Kellye Jacob

In the opening shot with Julie Andrews, the helicopter would swing by her (with the brave cinematographer hanging out of it) to do the take again. The downdraft would always knock her down! Also, in Sixteen Going on Seventeen, Charmaine Carr had her ankle wrapped as she had hurt it during rehearsals. Apparently you could originally see it if you looked closely, but they covered it up when it was remastered.

Anne

Love this movie!! You should check out Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon - It's one of the greatest comedy films ever made!!

Angelic_Wings

Gigi is a fun musical. An American in Paris is one of my faves. Hello Dolly! Is also brilliant. My absolute fave movie of all time is Victor/Victoria. Pretty please do Victor Victoria for me? It’s not as well known but it’s so good!

Angelic_Wings

Oliver! Is another great movie musical. The king and I is a great one too!

Angelic_Wings

Cabaret is also brilliant
