From Chris: I had been wanting to see this movie for something like 15 years and reviewing it finally got me to sit down and watch. Imprint puts out the Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner (who's very young in this role) movie from Paramount in a satisfactory transfer. Definitely not a spanking new transfer, the VistaVision movie would look beautiful with a new 4K scan. Definition and detail are solid, if not very good. From the negative, elements are unrestored but indicate little wear beyond a few minor issues. A new restoration would tighten up the scant color registration errors and oversaturated magenta push.
Fine Hollywood thriller carried by Spencer Tracy, who's way too old and out of shape for the role. Hollywood just didn't worry about those things in the '50s and '60s if the star was a big name. Hard to believe he's a legendary mountain climber given his age and condition, even if his character is supposedly over the hill. I can see why many dig this movie, which features an involving moral conflict and a harrowing man versus the mountain theme.
