From Chris: New anime film from the animation director behind acclaimed films  like Spirited Away and Your Name making his directorial debut. Adapts a complex Japanese novel.

Shockingly violent and  bloody, earning its R rating, for a film that otherwise goes for a mix  of wholesome and heroic themes. Way different tone in story and premise  than you'd get from the West. The rookie director is a little rough  around the edges, though it's a mostly entertaining anime.

The  animation...isn't quite as viscerally pleasing as I expected. Many earthtones in the palette and the key frames aren't elevated much of the time beyond ordinary.
