Damn. Can’t help but feel sorry for mc. Guess I know how the 3rd year trumpet felt in the 1st season.

I wrote about this on Reddit when the episode first aired, but I think the reason why Mayu keeps asking if Kumiko wants her to forfeit is because she still doesn’t know Kumiko’s true stance on the matter. Kumiko keeps talking about how “Kitauji is a meritocracy”, and while that may be true and the correct answer to give as president, it’s clear as day that she’s personally struggling with the possibility that she might lose the solo part, and Mayu, whose biggest concern is not making enemies at her new school, can see right through that. I think Mayu just wants a straight answer from Kumiko; whether that’s “yes, I want you to forfeit” or “no, and I will support and defend you if you do get chosen”. Kumiko’s current answers are diplomatic, but she’s clearly keeping Mayu at a distance, making Mayu unsure of where she fits in the band’s hierarchy. Is it logical? Maybe not entirely, but they’re kids (and Japanese, where explicit hierarchy is extremely important to their culture), so I can certainly see where the fear comes from. Next episode is one of my favorites, so I’m looking forward to Tony’s reaction next week!
