Butter side up or butter side down (Patreon)

So, here's what I'm thinking for the new characters in Episode 2: two Scottish clans of birds: one living in the trees and one living on the ground, the tree birds wear kilts with a vertical tartan pattern and the ground birds have a horizontal pattern. They have been feuding for generations over the patterns of tartan, al la the big-endians and little-endians of Gulliver's travels. 

This little trick requires asymmetric tartans but would be very difficult to spot (part of the fun I suppose). I am wondering if it might be just a little bit too subtle.
