Hey everyone!

This is just a behind-the-scenes video from the new place. This accompanies our next public video, which is basically a tour pre-moving of the office. This BTS video shows the server room and talks about some of Patrick Stone's quick contributions to keep the project rolling.

Awesome!

Erin!!

Can't wait to see all the progress!

It's great to have team members that know their stuff, and it's great for the team member to know that the boss trusts them to do their stuff. Sounds like a great working environment. :)

Need some better cooling and some 240V outlets for easier power backup and an overall lower amp draw for the room as a whole. Not sure what that room's AMP max is but if it's going to be a server room I can assume you are going to exceed the capacity of the room.

I knew someone would say this. So, again, our "server" is literally just a computer with a disk shelf. We don't keep data like "real" servers. We absolutely will not need that much power. The room equipment pulls about 300W. It does not need better cooling. It certainly does not need 240V. It's just a computer with 12 hard drives.

It's harder to add after the fact when the room is full than before. Just an idea for the future I guess. As someone who used to set up server rooms and run cable. These rooms always turn into storage sheds, 😆.

Having a team you can rely on with minimal input is a sign of success Steve. Congrats.

This statement sums it up, more than anything else. Once you go beyond the team of just you, you are always only as good as your team is, and the GN team really seems to be top notch all the way around. That also makes the management side of things so much easier and less of a hassle to deal with.

No fire sprinklers required for construction?

Related to this is a good manger that knows or is able to tell how much instruction their employees need. There's a huge difference in telling somebody to do a thing and why, verses telling them how to do the thing all the way down to micromanaging, verses telling them what effect (goal) you want, possibly adding why as well, and leaving them to make it happen.

For your size, a wall mount 12-16U switch rack would have been what I'd go for if cheaper used full sized racks weren't available in time. I've gotten full height/full depth 4 post enclosed racks for $20-100 from ewaste recyclers and business leaving California. If you're going to want a 4post rack eventually, make a saved ebay search for server racks locally for cheap, maybe even a Craiglist wanted post. Not sure what the going rate is now, but those things are too costly to ship or travel far for the price they sell at used. Enterprise IT can be massively cheap if you're patient. Not gonna comment on only doing a half sheet of plywood for the wall. At the current prices, it'd be cheaper to have the whole room gold plated.

I believe the 240V comment was most likely from an Australian/NZ viewer as we use 240V down under here. It lowers the current draw through the mains wiring which is a good thing, you're 110V 20-32A gear scares me tbh (also makes wires unnecessarily larger than they need to be).

I forgot to watch this and it sat in my email :(

very cool to hear the story behind the server rack.

Great video. Got a new patreon subscriber here, since a mousemat would cost me over 50$ to import but I still wanted to support what you guys do.
