The item "Trap Rune" (http://www.wowhead.com/item=133882/trap-rune)  is offered on the quest "Lay Waste, Lay Mines" which is a few quests into the Moon Guard quest chain in Suramar. You are given an item which allows you to place a rune on the ground which does significant area-of-effect damage to any mobs in the immediate area, but not outside the Moon Guard zone.

I began experimenting with this item because of its gold farming potential-it may have some but it only works against certain mobs and many in the zone don't drop loot, so is limited in application for that purpose.

However, I discovered that it is one of a very few quest items which can be used anywhere (apart from pvp currently where literally nothing can be used at all other than base abilities, even pvp items, due to a glitch). The runes do not do anything other than persist for about a minute and look extremely cool-essentially the item is a really cool unintended toy.

You can put down as many as six runes and they look quite spectacular on medium to high settings. I tested this with a class trial character and could see the runes produced by my main. (A sidenote here: never, ever ask trade chat whether they can see pretty lights unless you want a lot of unhelpful comments).

I tested the item in a dungeon and it produces the visual effect (though again, not the aoe damage).

I am testing methods to see if the item can be kept after the quest, which is an important of the Suramar questline and necessary for flying. Someone on wowhead reports he was able to keep the item post-quest-I imagine it can be done by deleting the item while on the quest, re-taking it, then using item restoration to recover it, but I will try a range of techniques and post results here accordingly.
