Yet now, here she was, unexpectedly and casually appearing in the last place he could have ever imagined seeing her.

His entire being was screaming at him to go and approach her, to talk to her and hear her voice again, to finally hold her once more. He felt like a parched man looking at the only water in a vast, infernally hot desert.

But he turned himself into an immovable stone because he had already made a decision, and he was genuinely terrified right now. Terrified that if he dared to move to get to her, her beautiful and bright world would darken in the blink of an eye.

He remembered all the times he had been so confident that he was the only one who could change her life for the better, that he was the only one who could give her everything she needed and wanted, and that he would be the only one who could protect her. But every time, no matter what he did, everything always ended with her dying with tears in her eyes.

So he hardened himself, took his phone out, and stared at his wallpaper—a picture of Eva and her daughter. He gazed at it, and just like that, he miraculously managed to hold himself back, something that had been absolutely impossible for him to do in the past.

Something in him told him to just leave, and he knew that was definitely the best thing for him to do instead of just sitting there and torturing himself. But he honestly and strongly believed that Eva would definitely not see him. Because Eva never noticed him first. It was always him who had to barge right before her just so she could see him. That’s why he genuinely believed that it was impossible for her to even accidentally glimpse at him.

So he stayed, telling himself that this would be just the same as him just staring at her through his phone.

However, when she held that man's hands and began to dance around him, his resolve began to crack. He could feel his bloodlust, his jealousy, swirling and boiling within him. He wanted to go and break that man's wrists and grab his Eva away. He would then take her to a place where no one else could touch her but him. He would…

She turned to him. Her eyes—those breathtaking blue eyes—found his.

In that moment, he stopped breathing. Was this… real? How could this be real? This was supposed to be impossible!

When he saw her drop the man's hands and move toward him, he heard his heart literally stop beating as well. How could this be happening?

As he watched her try to get through the dancers, his body somehow began to function again. He started breathing, and his heart came back to life. But his hands shook, the wine in his glass began moving, and the ashes of his cigarette fell.

Fuck, he was literally shaking. Him, of all creatures. Just because his woman was approaching him on her own accord for the very first time.

His mind began to go into overdrive. This was an entirely new situation for him, and he couldn't remember if he'd ever been this happy before, even though she hadn't reached him yet.

Suddenly, something fell.

When he looked down, his pupils dilated at the sight of his phone, its screen momentarily lit, revealing his beloved wallpaper of Eva and her daughter for a moment with the cracked screen before the screen turned completely black again.

Dread filled his chest.

That beautiful image in his mind started to shatter into pieces, and then Eva's face, as she died over and over, flashed like a slideshow in his mind.

His trembling fingers clenched as he slowly looked up. Silently, he was begging her not to reach him, not to notice him like always, and to run away from him as far as she could instead. "I am going to do this just once," he whispered. "I am going to let you live your happy life this time... only this time... so don't come to me, Eva. Run away from me now, because I'm never going to do this again next time. I beg you..."

But his almost inaudible voice trailed off because the woman he was begging to run away was now standing right before him.
