I found an interesting example of the idea of men being both subject and object in Lindsay Ellis's video about the little mermaid. A lot of Very Smart People blamed girls' love of Disney princesses for the wage gap, saying that it was making women go into "feminine" careers like nursing, while boys watched Bob the Builder and got good, manly jobs. The subtext is super clear - women are getting paid less because they're being girly and getting girls' jobs. If they cut that shit out and started acting like men and got men's jobs they'd be paid a proper wage and the problem would solve itself. (Also, construction workers aren't always paid well and are often the victims of wage theft. I wonder how being manlier would solve that.)

Interesting thing is how jobs done by women are paid less, but when they're done by men it's understood the pay should be more. Early computer programmers were all women, paid super low wages. As it transitioned to be a male-dominated profession, pay went up as well

Right? Even more, before "computers" were machines they were women who did the dry computational work so men could daydream and bullshit. And now there's a very strong stereotype that "women are bad at math," when it was an exclusively female job just decades ago! Also, Unlearning Economics's new video goes into some really interesting discussion of the gender wage gap. I'll have to rewatch it after having watches your new video.

I really liked that UE video. I’d been hearing JBP talk about those studies of stronger gender career preferences in more “egalitarian” countries and I knew it was bullshit but I was glad to see that articulated
