Revenge can be a good thing for some; However if the Avatar seeks revenge, there's no balance. People will look at the Avatar as a tyrant, instead of someone who protects. Aang would fail his past lives by inducing fear into the common people.

At least Aang shouldn't kill people. Other avatars probably have different morals based on how they were raised.

Katara cared more about Aang's soul and purity than she wanted to see those men hurt. Normally she would be right there with Aang, but the Avatar State has a tendency to make Aang do things he normally never would be willing to because it's influenced by all the past avatars who have been hurt or have suffered great loss. She just didn't want him to kill them.
