So the reason that Goku was able to go super Saiyan 3 initially was because he was dead. When we see him in the Buu Saga he basically just unlocked it, or had recently done so anyway. It was originally meant to just be like "the only reason I can use this is because I'm already dead, so the strain it'll put on my body won't matter." The training he could do in heaven (they call it Other World) was essentially constant and under much worse conditions than, say, Vegeta could get on earth in the gravity chamber or what Vegeta's body could handle. Him being able to just jump into it now is probably him mastering it and his body being used to it but, they don't have that kind of time with Trunks lol. Getting Trunks to God transformations would be difficult, especially since he's never even been around it. It took Vegeta 6 months to a year of constant training with Whis to figure out how to use god energy, and since time travel is a big no-no, Whis wouldn't want to train Trunks, much less help him.
