As we approach the end of the year and look towards the next one around the corner, I'm starting to come up with a better idea of what my capacities will be and what kind of work I want to get done both short-term and long-term.

One thing I'd like to start doing more of is low-effort Wiki-style comparative maps or value-themed maps, and I'm sharing that ability with you by allowing the community to use the same base map to explore and map out how different things/variables/life might play out in Altera.

One of the reasons I started this project was to be able to better compare peoples, cultures, and phenomena around the world with less scale inconsistencies and political borders compromising the analytical lens. I was frustrated that, for instance, the diversities of Europe almost always shone through while diverse and vast geographies like India, Brazil, much of Africa, as well as Indigenous lands in Australia and the Americas, would be simplified to the majority base minimum. With the political landscape of Altera, more focus can be pivoted to areas we understand the least, forcing us to look up or look into areas we held for granted.

With that said, I hope you will enjoy using this base map for your own purposes. Note too that I have highlighted new additional states that will be added to Altera in the January update, so consider this an exclusive first glimpse at what is to come!

To best use the file, I'd recommend opening the file in an Illustrator-compatible program. There, you will be able to use the graphic styles feature to colour code the country shapes easily. The SVG will be compatible with most programs, even for coding instead. Inkscape, I'm told, will also preserve the layer names, which come in handy, as all country shapes are properly named.

For the Illustrator (ai) file, use this link. For the SVG file, download here

To share your map as a community contribution, you can join us on Discord or post on r/atlaslatera. Who knows, maybe your envisioning might be accepted as canon!
