Elena is a Doppelgänger of Katherine meaning they run in the same blood line, which is the "Petrova" blood line and they look exactly identical. so that makes Elena the "Doppelgänger" since she is the last born in the Petrova line.

Hey, 2 things that you seem to be confused about (these are not spoilers, just clarifying): 1. The curse (Sun and Moon curse) is that werewolves can only turn into a werewolf on a full moon and they HAVE TO turn into a werewolf on a full moon - and vampires are damaged by the sun (although vampires found a way around that with magic - like the 'daylight rings'). So if this curse would be broken that means that werewolves can turn into werewolves whenever they want - and they can choose to never turn if they don't want to. Vampires would be able to walk in the sun without magic rings/necklaces/etc. So that's what the werewolves would gain by breaking it. 2. Doppelgängers. So far all we know is what Isobel's friend (the woman from Season 2 episode 2 - Bad Moon Rising) said, which is: "Typically a doppelgänger is a living, breathing double of oneself." and "Doppelgängers usually torment the people they look like, trying to undo their lives". Elena replies with "And more things we already know.." because Katherine has been messing with them, trying to break up Stefan and Elena, hurting Jenna etc.
