I finally saw the original Godzilla! I found it interesting as a film that I assume wasn’t made with the intention of launching a wild franchise. This is a film with a surprising amount of depth and wow the last act was AMAZING!

This first Godzilla roar was created by coating a leather glove in resin and running it down a double bass. And maybe a hot take, but that hand puppet in his first appearance is still the scariest he's ever looked to me.

I like how the oxygen destroyer is finally revealed because in a sense it's already been revealed in the continuously devastated and deeply concerned look on the doctor's face throughout. I've not seen the Captain Marvel films so I can't make any comparison (I actually have no desire to see them). But I really like the tone of this film which bears a little comparison to King Kong (1933), a little just in regards to the island sequences and a bit more so to The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) which was the first movie about a creature unleashed by an atomic bomb and apparently was a big influence on Godzilla. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is quite a good film, you should check it out, but the tone of Godzilla (Japanese title Gojira) has a larger impact because of the actual destruction Japan saw and experienced at the end of WWII. The terror on the faces of all the spectators as the see their city in "a sea of flames" has a definite realness about it.
