Somehow I'd never heard of this movie despite being very familiar with the actual Memphis Belle, which Best Years of Our Lives director William Wyler made a documentary about and lost a good deal of his hearing in the process, which I imagine is what got it requested. From what I've read, the film's story is a composite of what several B-17s did during the war, but nothing is completely made up, so that's probably a bit confusing to some people's sense of how important historical accuracy is. This is also the exact kind of thing my grandfather did during the war, which next month is getting its own miniseries from the Band of Brothers crew so I'm very much looking forward to that, and the off-chance he might actually appear in it since he knew some of the guys the source book is about.
