I have mixed feelings on this one. Part of it I whole heartedly loved. Part of it… well, it was a really well told story, I just didn’t like the story they told this week. Hope the next one is more up my alley.

*I did watch the aired version of the episode. I kind regret it, I do share some thoughts at the end about what was added in the extended version. I had already planned to watch all the extended episodes in season 4 and this really set it in concrete.

It probably won’t come as much of a surprise that this episode had a very rushed production. The New Caprica flashbacks were shot during the hiatus with the intention of seeding them throughout Season 3, in an obvious bit of coattail-riding on the new super popular genre show Lost. But then they decided to just burn it all off in a single episode, with the boxing story thrown in as something they could quickly put together without needing much of a set. The result is one of the most polarizing episodes of the whole show, with some fans loving the heightened emotional material while others call it contrived and even out of character in various spots. The fans also love to mock how the blood on Adama’s face after his fight doesn’t actually seem to be coming from anywhere, since Olmos had the idea for it on the spot and they couldn’t create a more realistic makeup job with actual cuts.

The way that makes so much sense. I've been thinking about it and I am pretty sure had this storyline started the season by filling in the gap, or had it at least happened before we left New Caprica rather than half a season later I would have liked it. It does make a lot of sense to me that they would have potentially hooked up during that time. BUT I feel like I was told they were married and just accepted they had both moved on and were happy. Perhaps that was my fault for accepting it so blindly, but I feel a bit manipulated to revisit it after 9 episodes of not even a hint of "unfinished business" between the two.

My icon comes from this episode, along with the phrase "The Fighting Agathons," which the fandom immediately adopted to refer to Helo and Athena, so I can't hate all of it. But you're not alone in your puzzlement/annoyance with the Lee/Kara storyline taking up so much oxygen. Obviously the pairing had its fans, as any will-they/won't-they couple does, but in my experience of the fandom, it was very much over them at this point. As you say, it could have made some sense if it had been placed earlier, but too much of this episode was thrown together from all sides, as Ryan has explained. (I did love getting a little bit of Adama and Roslin's friendship-possible-relationship on New Caprica, along with them smoking whatever the planet's version of pot is. Adds a bit more texture to their cuddle-stargazing.) Personally, I think the whole boxing plot is stupid -- when there are ~40k human beings left in the entire universe, you need every single one of them in good health and top condition, *especially* those who are in charge of defense/maintaining the fleet/flying the ships/etc. Having them pummel each other to "blow off steam" is an extraordinarily dumb and dangerous thing to do. What happens if your best viper pilot loses an eye? Your navigation officer suffers brain damage? Someone lands a lucky punch and kills someone else? It's ridiculous. Even if it was something the military on Galactica did during peace time, nobody in their right mind would continue to put people in harm's way unnecessarily and on purpose. Meh.

Heck yea, killer icon too! I do love the phrase fighting Agathons. At this point, I would love to watch the Helo and Sharon show. Or at least let them be the center of a whole episode 😅

The only thing you really missed from the extended cut is Roslin and Adama getting high 🧐 Oh, and more Ellen.
