You don’t fool me Russel T Davies— this was one episode disguised as two and it was FANTASTIC. such a clever way to incorporate such a human story with a strong sci-fi twist in a historic WWII backdrop. It’s that unique combination that makes this show so special.

Steven Moffat quickly gained a reputation for writing the show's absolute scariest episodes, and he really hit the ground running here, with many fans still calling this his best work (don't worry, that speaks much more to how spectacular this story is than any problems with the others). And no one saw it coming because he'd been a comedy writer before this, best known for the sitcom Coupling (check that show out, by the way, it's hilarious). He'd also written a spoof sketch of the show for Red Nose Day years before it came back, The Curse of Fatal Death, which ended up being pretty uncannily prophetic about several things the revival would do, even ones he wasn't involved with (I recommend waiting until you've finished the third season before you watch it, so you'll be familiar with all the characters who appear). And despite all that, he still manages to create a completely happy ending that doesn't feel like a copout at all, and was even more meaningful to the longtime fans, as going all the way back to 1963, EVERY SINGLE STORY in the show featured at least one innocent person suffering an undeserved death. Just go back to Eccleston's ecstatic delivery of "Just this once, everybody lives!" with that in mind.

Eeeeeee!!! I'll have more to say later (you know I will!) But I'm just so happy because I just settled in for the day and now I have an easy choice of what to watch!!

Aimee

“Are you my mummy?” “Just this once—everyone lives!” One of the greatest two-parters in the entire series.

If anyone is having further issues with the episode sync, the US DVD/BluRay's, and UK iPlayer version usually run 4% faster than the US streaming services (Prime, Max etc). So if you have UK viewers, they should somehow find a way to slow down your reaction by 4%, or speed up their home version by 4%.

You are going to find that Steven Moffet is a master storyteller! And Russel T Davies directing is just the chef's kiss. Yes, we will be seeing Capt Jack again. (LOTS of him in an upcoming episode! lol) In fact, he is SUCH a popular character - not only does he have a recurring role, he also has his own spin off (which you should also watch) called Torchwood!

I love it when someone comes out swinging with something outside of what they're known for! The Curse of the Fatal Death sounds like something to look forward to.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm still so confused over which version should be the "correct" versions. I know my blu-ray versions all run 4% slower than my streaming versions. I read that 100 minutes of NTSC would equal 96 minutes in PAL so I thought the streaming version might be correct. At any rate, that's what I'm continuing with so hopefully it can work for most people.

casualnerdreactions

Ah, I've been wondering what Torchwood was all about. I'm definitely looking at the spin offs trying to figure out how to incorporate them into my schedule, Assuming, people want to watch those as well loll.

One of my teachers in highschool was a huge whovian. If we ever got bored in class or wanted to rile him up all we had to do was whisper "are you my mummy" and suddenly class was off the rails

casualnerdreactions

🤣 that’s perfect. It’s such an iconic line and I’ll definitely think of this episode anytime I hear any version of that question.

It started out as just a fake title that Davies submitted Doctor Who episodes under, to avoid spoiler hounds finding them (it's an anagram for the title). Then he decided that should actually be its own show.

I think the streaming will work for most, so you are good. It's just a quirk of reacting to British TV shows which are filmed at 25 fpm, compared to US 24fpm.

Moffat is a hero of mine (specifically a writing hero). He's one of my favorite writers on this show. Can I just say, your references make my day. They are all things I know and love. Star Wars, Firefly, and on and on.

Hi, just to let you know RE: the sync issues. After season 4, the situation will fix itself because the show started shooting in standardised 1080p 24fps after the BBC finally acquired those cameras, around 2009. The way that Blu-ray works is it needs to be in 24fps to be 1080p so it's slowed down that way, even for the British Blu-rays. So, yeah, unfortunately it's a thing for the first 4 seasons of the show whilst they were still shooting in SD 25fps as was standard at the time, but once the show moves to real, non-upscaled HD it will all be fine and you are free to watch your Blu Rays :)) (I just feel bad cause you bought the box set and can't even use it grr)

casualnerdreactions

Thanks for that bit of info Charlotte! It's funny that I only have the blurays through season 4 🤣 But they won't go to waste. tons of extras to look through later that I'm sure will make it worth it. I already bought most of the show on Amazon because they had it on sale for $9.99 a season so... I couldn't help it. Still need to pick up some of the off season specials and any spin offs I end up doing, but I'm excited to continue the journey!

I'm so glad we're here. This episode pair sets up so much, and it was a great callback for fans of the older series, where the plot of one story would last for anywhere between 2 and 5 episodes. Thankfully modern who rarely does anything that long, but when it does its long specials, they hit.

casualnerdreactions

These were a treat for everyone I think! I love longer stories, but even more than that I love it when they HIT! Your comment just makes me more excited for what’s to come.

Thine Tiny Equine

The ride to come is the longest one in the series you might say, but no spoilers. Only dancing! DWho was my introduction to old shows getting modern reboots, and it pretty much shaped how I picked my series. Hope you love it as much as I did!

Jack had a spin-off series from Doctor Who called Torchwood, I don't know if you could include that series when you get to the season where Torchwood kicked off from Doctor Who

casualnerdreactions

It's all subjective on my enjoyment, but I am working through the best way to incorporate all the spinoffs without pausing the main show as we speak.
