I loved this movie throughout most of its length, but then the ending destroys it. After a perfectly biting and pitch-black satire of suburban paranoia and fear of the other, complete with a speech from Tom Hanks about how he'd been the real bad guy the whole time, it turns out he was completely justified in all his suspicions, and there goes the whole message. Still, pretty great stuff up to then.

Oh interesting! I'd be interested in an alternative ending where they played up that type of ending, but as it is I think I might have felt cheated and was glad it ended up being real. You're right though, it does undercut the message a touch.
