Did she just get away with murder? Certainly this lady lost her mind! This was an incredibly unique film that kept me fully invested and my mind wondering.

Very enjoyable reaction, Chris! It is a masterstroke having the main protagonist dead at the very beginning, and narrating the whole picture... it shows that this film is a very dark comedy or satire more than a realistic film. In fact, I understand there was a scene planned or filmed, and then discarded, that opened the film with the inside of the mortuary, and William Holden's body sits up and starts narrating! This film is a rare example of Hollywood being self-aware and savaging itself. Many people played themselves in the picture, unaware of the vicious commentary it was conveying. Hedda Hopper, the famous Hollywood columnist of the time, in particular had no idea what she was in and that her whole appearance in the film at the end made her in a sense one of the villains. This is truly one of my favorite films, and the final shot of Norma reaching out to grasp us -- those people in the dark-- is one of the most haunting in cinema.

That would have been a fantastic way to open the film 😅 although I see why they might have gone the way they did! I’m editing this tomorrow so this will be fun to keep in mind.
