I had a great time watching this movie! It might be my favorite Hitchcock film so far. The action. The intrigue. The crop duster. I love how different all three Alfred Hitchcock films I've seen are. Looking forward to more!

Knights Who Say Sledge

Hitch notoriously avoided location shooting as much as possible - so the house at the end and Mount Rushmore are both sets and matte paintings. I remain obsessed with the house at the end and have ever since I first saw it on VHS as a kid. I think your questions about how Cary Grant is so good at becoming a spy in the film is a salient question but, I'm imagining, for a 1959 audience the question might have been less noticeable. This role fits in entirely with Grants film persona. Much like we don't question any longer when Harrison Ford or Bruce Willis do adventurous things in films at this stage due, at least in part, to the audience's understanding of what it means to cast Ford or Willis in a lead role. Eva Marie Saint is famous for this film and On the Waterfront, first and foremost. She also played Superman's mom in Superman Returns awhile ago. James Mason, who plays the fake Townsend here, is a massively iconic actor as well. Martin Landau, who played Townsend's "right arm" and secretary, went on to an illustrious movie career that spanned decades. So glad to get to ride along as you enjoyed this film - it was a thrill to find out you hadn't been exposed to the cropduster scene before and got to experience it fresh... it's among the most commonly grabbed moments from film in movie montages, so it is great you didn't have any impact from those sorts of moments in pop culture to interfere with your experience. Perfect follow ups to this move are Vertigo, The Birds, Rope, and Rebecca. I'm also a massive fan of Frenzy from towards the end of his career, but my favorite and - arguably his masterpiece by some critic's measures - is Vertigo. Thanks much for sharing this experience here with us.

I'm so glad you enjoyed my reaction. Thank you for the great information. It makes sense that if I were more familiar with Grant's work I might have never questioned his adaptation to the situation. I am thinking to make Vertigo my next Hitchcock reaction. It's getting harder to choose because they all sound so interesting.
