Is this movie a masterclass in how to change genres and yet somehow feel like a true sequel to the original? WOW. So much adrenaline and yet still so terrifying.

I've seen all four of the Alien movies and I really don't like the last two. In my universe, the story ends after #2 and they all lived happily ever after!

I may have reacted to the entire franchise, but I'm inclined to agree with you there. While there some good moments in the rest, I would prefer they don't exist. Still, I can't help but be excited about the new alien movie they're working on.

I can’t imagine this movie with Ripley’s daughter being left out. It’s in some ways the heart of the movie. Still, great film! James Cameron definitely nailed it. I plan to definitely watch 3. It will be interesting to see what David fincher does with this because he is another completely different style of director.

The behind the scenes story of a few of Cameron's early films (Aliens and The Abyss) is that he turned out superior director's cuts but the studios made him cut them down to still good but less stellar theatrical cuts. I am so glad we have access to the longer, stronger cuts of Aliens and The Abyss in the years since the film's initial releases. I totally agree that Aliens suffers a lot in the theatrical cut from amputating the narrative about Ripley's daughter from the film. Aliens is thematically a movie about two mothers duking it out (one her lost her own child, tragically, and adopts another child in the narrative and the other Alien mother being one whose children must "adopt" the bodies of humans in order to continue their species - cutting Ripley's daughter truncates the thematic elements playing themselves out fully).
