What happens when Mads Mikkelsen's attempt to invest Joseph Kony's money on shorting airline stock is foiled? Well, he'll have to organise a high-stakes poker game at the Casino Royale in Montenegro, of course!

And there's only one man who can possibly infiltrate the game and stop him (Due to, and im not kidding here, the reasoning 'someone said you're the best at poker at the office').... James Bond.

It's another reboot, it's another guy, it's another Casino Royale!

And as a result of calling this guest spot literally a full year in advance- joining the boys is the one and only Phoebe Roy!

Fwiw, the asthma inhaler is in the novel

Fun fact: the bomb maker was played by the guy who INVENTED PARKOUR

Justine

I love you

All right, it's been fun. But I'm gonna hit play now, and I swear to God...

It blew my mind to find out that the same guy directed this one and Goldeneye and none of the other modern Bonds. Those are the only two Bond movies that are actually good movies! Why don't they ever call him back to do a second movie? Is he the director version of Lazenby?

this is going to be the 1954 tv movie I know it

A great movie

This movie made me think it was considered hot to suck someone's fingers. IT REALLY ISN'T

On Craig's voice- it's actually mostly identical to Bill Nighy's. I didn't realise this until I listened to Nighy's audiobook of Moonraker, where it was impossible not to picture Craig as Bond because they have almost EXACTLY the same voice.

Wait. Finger sucking. A thing for hands Daniel Craig is yoshikage kira

After how on point you all were for Live and Let Die, I feel let down by this episode. You spent more time talking about the lack of working fire exits in a stairwell than the movie's complete disregard for the lives of its African characters. This movie says that it is okay to endanger African civilians, assault an ambassador, and blow up an embassy to preserve not-Boeing's stock price, and you barely even gave that a mention.

oranjest1

was smirking in wide eyed frozen fear @ Abby thinly threatening to use the voice, like fucking Ulfric Stormcloak slaying Toryg

Lay-Tex-Lips

Now I wanna see the Craig shirt be the finger sucking panel from DiU but with Craig Bond

At the time this came out, I didn't mind much that they switched the game to poker, but I did mind that they switched it to Texas Hold'em, compared to the more classic draw poker I grew up with, or the classy stud poker they played on Star Trek. Of course, in the meantime I've learned that actually everything the Bond franchise does is fad chasing, and if anything seems classy it's just due to the passage of time.

The Bene Gesserit are all trans and the Voice is them dropping their voice training for a moment

Myla

Slightly disappointed you didn't pull Craig's line: "They'll know you died scratching my balls" Which was the only line I actually laughed at in this film

BanditCrab

Suggestion for the Craig t-shirt tagline: "it's finger-licken' good!"

The Beak TM

Listening to this podcast has made me realise how posh Abi is

I just want to give a shout out to a friend of mine whom, many many years ago, made an absolutely hilarious GIF about Nintendo’s release lineup where they announced ‘Wii Music’ using an amazing bit of this movie. I can’t find the gif right now, but gods I will try.

Christine Pizan

personally i didn't think casino royale (1967) was a fakeout, it was just an honourable delivering of every bond film, as the podcast promised i was more afraid by all the build up deception where you had to say repeatedly you weren't covering it

Great episode, well worth the wait. I'm imagining Carter in bed with Castro, after a marathon session of truly revolutionary Cuban lovemaking. Carter is just absolutely spent. Castro reaches over to his bedside table, picks up a cigar, and lights it up. Carter's eyes widen as he realizes which cigar it is. He screams, "NOOOOOO!" The Presidential Palace in Havana goes up in a Michael Bay-level epic explosion.

With the number of Metal Gear Solid references this podcast has dropped, will we get an episode on it?

Can't stop imagining Bond as Yoshikage Kira with his newly developed hand fetish.

Cate Kneale

I'm hoping you can explain the hotel in the middle of nowhere in QoS. Because why???

im scared to listen to this one, I was already burned once...

I actually think Alice was right about the Unprovoked Violence, mainly because of the early scenes of Bond killing people and causing mayhem in Madagascar. He kills multiple people on a construction site, presumably civilians minding their own business, blows it up, then moves on to the Nambutu embassy and blows that up. Sure, there was that guy on the construction site who tried to fight him, but still that was just some guy, not an enemy. I feel like given all that, especially the optics of an agent of the British Empire invading an embassy to extrajudicially execute a person of color, really should have pushed this one up to at least a 6. So yeah, totally agree with Alice, just don't think she managed to articulate well in the moment why.

Also I agree with Phoebe's interpretation of "the bitch is dead", and I'll add that I think it was meant for M, since M was telling Bond that if he needs time or whatever, this was Bond's way of closing M out from his emotional state. I don't think he really thinks of Vesper in that way aside from an irrational anger at her for dying. Obviously maybe giving the film way too much credit, but that just feels more correct than to say Bond decides he hates women now because of this.
