Hi everyone,

I've worked on a simple node setup that should improve hair by bringing some translucency.

Technically it works for both Cycles and Eevee but the results in Eevee are variable so it's mainly meant for Cycles.

The pics were taken with a strong area light behind the characters and a front point light at default brightness. Pics are after/before in that order.

I've tried it on a few characters and results seem consistent without tweaking needed but let me know if you find ways to improve it. The goal was to make it as simple and largely effective as possible. I've tried different setups but didn't see better results with more complex nodes.

The node is in the blend file below and the last pic shows how to add it to already released characters as I don't plan to update them for a single node. Basically you put it after the main shader node and connect the first three inputs. You can play with the translucent value if you want but the default setup should be fine.

I've updated the UI so that it detects the node and adds the translucent value in the UI (hairstyles section). By default the value will be set at 0 in Eevee mode since it's not flawless, it will be up to you to activate it or not.

By the way, this will be the last UI update for Blender 3.3 as I've switched to 3.5.

Edit : after posting the news I've updated the UI again because in some cases you could have the translucent slider multiple times if hair has multiple materials. Fixed version is 1.7.2 for blender 3.4+ and 1.6.4 for blender 3.3

Ooo, I love it. I added something similar to that last Kait Diaz render I did

Yeah I tried the node you used after seeing this render but it didn't work for me, especially the hair alpha. The one I shared is as simple as it gets and seems to work everytime with one slider. After using it more maybe I'll add some more tweaking.
