I'm in a spoiler mood today. So I'm going to spoil the show for lil Ally..... Ready? "Why can't I stay?" Boom. Just spoiled then entire show.

Connor Blake

I think this episode did a great job of establishing how Angelus could terrorize the group without lifting a finger, even if some of it was easy pickings. But little things like invoking Darla and Holtz's suicides to suggest no one will ever love Connor or straight-up just bullying Wes for being a failed watcher who no one will ever call a champion in order to prey on his insecurities were both devastatingly brilliant tactics. And I actually liked how gross they made Angelus with heinous shit like suggesting Angel has masturbated listening to Fred and Gunn. It's so fucking twisted. "Evil" characters on network TV shows can be so boring and watered down so I appreciate they actually display him being vile like that. And I get how some people think the gross dialogue shit is a little gratuitous but I think of it as Angelus trying to ruin their image of Angel, like they'll never see him the same again. Not a bad play when you're stuck in a cage.

Foamy

My favorite part about this ep is that SMG wasn't in it. Her character would have destroyed Angelus, and her performance would have dominated. Smart to leave her out.

Oxmustube

Another episode where family is shown to mean everything to Connor.

I just find David's Angelus a little off in this episode but I put it down to that he hasn't really had to do this since BTVS Season 2 other than in a few flashback episodes and like one season 1 Angel episode it isn't terrible but it isnt great either other than that I love all the relationship drama in this episode all those love triangles very intense

Shut the front door!! I did not know Sean Astin directed this. After all these years. I love new info. Even when it’s old info.

Markus E.

I didn‘t even know that Sean Astin had worked as a director at all. Apparently it‘s the only Angel episode he directed.

I think when you consider who raised Connor, who he Freudian slipped and referred to as his father, it becomes apparent that he meant what he was saying to Angelus. His words in that scene echo what Holtz taught him.

This is my most rewatched episode after "Darla". And today I found out Sean Astin directed it. Today! 40 odd minutes ago. How is that possible? What kind of fan am I? Questioning my whole identity right now. WTF!

angelcakes

Yeah for me the WHOLE reason he hates Angel so much is BECAUSE he sees him as Angelus and nothing else.

Alley, totally random but I think Sofie and you should totally do a collab rewatch of Fool for Love. You both absolutely adored that episode and there's so much fascinating stuff to talk about in it. There are probably other amazing episodes you can rewatch too, but FFL sticks out for me for some reason. Plus you two are very close in your watching progression so you could talk about pretty much everything without worrying about spoilers. 😊

I'm surprised you're enjoying this season, I mean it is all great minus the Cordy/Connor stuff but that plot is awful and unnecessary.

Mary Kate

I love how bummed you are when they say they're restoring Angel's soul lol. But of course they're not going to bring him back for only one ep, in the same way of course we weren't going to get through Angel the series without an appearance from Angelus in the present day. I love love love these episodes and am actually bummed we're going back to Buffy for a bit haha.

Seasons 4 & 5 are my favorites of the show, so I’m pleased you’re enjoying 4 so much so far. It’s always about this point where I have to thank the show runners for not overusing Angelus and killing the tension before now. There’s the brief ep in S1 where he rears his ugly head for a heartbeat so that viewers who didn’t catch S2 of Buffy would understand the threat but other than that, nada. He’s very much a sword of damocles, and it would’ve been easy for him to lose his punch. Also s4 Wesley is peak Wesley, and as much as I loke Fred and Gunn as individuals, I find them boring and a little cheesy as a couple. I like her better with Wes.

Martin Waits

They were always going to bring him back at some point, but you are right that they really needed to wait for the right moment. S4 Wes is fantastic.
