Buffy gave us the Season 6 thesis in the season 5 finale: “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.”

Anya's character always served the needs of the show not any logical consistency.

G A

I personally think Anya doesn't do social norms because she's 1100 years old. She's seen society and norms change many, many, times so why bother keeping up? I don't think its Autism coding, just someone over keeping up. Personally this is one of my least favorite seasons. I hated seeing Dawn neglected and the idea it's supposed to be acceptable because Buffy is depressed. So is Dawn. Dawn was going to jump in The Gift, Buffy took that decision away from her, forcing Dawn to live in a world without her mother and sister; which is the situation Buffy didn't want to live in. Dawn was so depressed she was hugging the Buffybot, then Buffy came back to her but wasn't really there and giving her food that she'd had sex on. Buffy was such a shell of herself SMG hated the season. Buffy was still going to leave her sister with Spike after the AR and was degraded into looking sad her abuser left. Willow... I felt the magic addiction was a cop out to avoid really addressing toxic traits in Willow that has been building up since season 2. I don't think magic addiction made her violate Tara, she's been possessive and controlling since s2 when she screamed at Xander for kissing Cordelia then tried to use Oz to make Xander jealous. Buffy was hanging out with Faith for one episode and Willow was angry about it, again because she's possessive. But it was OK for Willow to have her HS wicca club and go to basketball games as Buffy was slaying. She was back with Oz but still cried Xander had sex with Faith ( Anya was right imo when she said Willow doesn't want anyone else to have Xander even though she didn't want him.) She needed to punish Oz even though she once cheated on him. And everyone still viewed her as cute innocent Willow. Violating Tara was the evolution of never being checked. Not crazy about how Tara was back with her abuser by the end of the season given last season Tara's growth was telling her controlling family to buzz off. And when it's added to Buffy still going to Spike for Dawn after what he did just feels like a season of basically saying just wait and forgive your bad partner. Willow immediately going back to magic showed she wasn't better like Tara thought so who knows if Willow would go back to mind control on Tara if she ever wanted to break up, especially because now Tara got over it once, had she lived. Xander made a choice to avoid becoming an abuser and yet I feel like leaving Anya at the altar is supposed to be on par with the actual abuse this season. I also hate him being the one in OMWF because he learned his lesson after BBB about magic and its OOC for him to just try to brush off the people burning and dying. It's like they had the idea for the episode and eventually needed a Scoobie to do it and they picked Xander disregarding his character history/development.

Im still laughing at the giving Dawn food she had sex on comment! Poor Dawn.

that bear over there

to answer the question of no-soul spike versus no-soul angel. joss himself has said that the development of the spike character made him an exception to the rule (of no-soul vamps being total evil). but i would argue that spike has ALWAYS meant to be at least a little special, because going back to season 2, 'the judge' episode, where drusilla and spike brought back an ancient demon that was able to judge whether a person has humanity or not and burned the ones who did. the judge immediately wanted to burn spike & dru because he was disgusted by their love for each other. the only reason he doesnt is because they are the ones who reassembled him. so even back in season 2, we are told that spike has humanity in him. i think of it as, spike was such a soulful, kind human that even without a soul he is able to reflect humanity. that those traits were so big in him that it permeated more than his soul. so even without his soul, he still has remnants of those traits. drusilla, being a visionary, was able to see that in him, and that is why she chose him to be her mate.

SpikesEcho

Even David Fury eventually said: "Spike is something special. Spike retained enough compassion. Some part of his soul was always there that allowed him to fall in love with Buffy where no vampire could." Simply, they already had an Angel character, and were exploring "that" version of soul vs no soul....they very much did not want to do that again. And it was way more interesting to explore these concepts and what they mean in a soulless being who has remnants of humanity echoing through him (to his dismay), influencing him. And way more fascinating for an audience to watch.

Top marks to your subconscious for having you choose to repeatedly use the phrases "I wish...", "I just wish.." when talking about Anya!

Ooo I missed this posting because date night on Friday with the husband but I can't wait to watch! :)

I'm a little disappointed the Discord told her that Spike wanted his soul the whole time. I would have preferred they kept it up in the air until the show clarified that.

I remember thinking "Alley, you gotta stop saying 'I wish.'"

It's so easy to forget that all this drama and heartbreak was happening to a bunch of 21/22-year-old's.

I totally totally agree about Spike and that they should’ve told James Marsters because if any actor could have given duality and a double meaning to these lines, it would be him!!! I didn’t know that they didn’t tell him but that’s so obvious now. It ruins a little piece of the rewatchability of it. I think they could have had their cake and eat it with it being a surprise but also allowing James to give his performance more nuisance as you say. It just lacks his usual depth. I’d also say that Anya as a 2D character could make sense and be used in an interesting way by really showing how this has happened because her whole identity was being a vengeance demon and then that sort of got transferred onto Xander and her whole identity became him. However, they would have really needed to show more of that for the payoff and continue to push that theme more throughout the rest of the show too to back it up. I agree Anya is severely underused and honestly one of the most interesting characters, in Entropy, her processing the wedding and her feelings is never boring and I just wish they’d allowed her character that room to explore more.

AT thought rewatching season 2 and thinking about how i felt about buffy in season 7. she seems older than me in that season and im freaking 30

Ron Fehr

If you think about it, why would Spike go to a demon to get the chip out? It was humans that inserted it, therefore it makes sense, to me anyway, that only humans can remove it. Maybe the writers were thinking that James Marsters thought of that, and that he knew the real reason why Spike went to the demon.

I normally skip any wrap ups from any review show I watch, I don’t really enjoy them. But this was great you are so insightful! Although I would love to see the scenes/ moments you are talking about on screen, also during the normal episode review when you discus scenes or skip trough the episode. On a totally different note I would love to hear your in-depth analysis of Fleabag, my favorite show, after Buffy ofcourse! That show has so many layers and a totally unique concept, I think you might enjoy it, even though it is a totally different genre. Thanks for this wrap-up, your amazing, can not wait for season 7!

“Gonna talk about ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’! Talks about Spike for over an hour. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Suggestion for two people who never met in the show forming a platonic/romantic bond: Drusilla and Vamp Willow.
