NEW PERK: Quality of Teammates and Competition Dashboard (Patreon)
Content
The latest interactive Tableau dashboard is now live for Patreon subscribers. This one shows some interesting information about player deployment - their quality of teammates and competition and how it relates to their own time on ice.
There are a few ways that people measure quality of competition and teammates, and this method is the "Time on Ice %" method. The input here is TOI%, or the percentage of a team's minutes a certain player is on the ice for. For example, if the Habs played 60 5v5 minutes and Ben Chiarot played 20 5v5 minutes, his 5v5 TOI% is 33.3%. (Note: TOI% only includes games a player actually played in). A higher TOI% means a coach played them more.
To work out a player's quality of competition (or teammates), you consider all of the players a player played with (or against), how often they played with (or against) them, and their Time on Ice %. It's essentially a weighted average.
So at the end of that process, what you get is a stat that gives a good sense of how a coach deployed the player in question. The higher the TOI% Quality of Competition (QoC), the higher in the lineup the players he was matched up against were. The higher the TOI% Quality of Teammates (QoT), the higher in the lineup the players he played with were.
The tabs in this dashboard show interactive and customizable scatterplots showing the relationship between a player's QoC and QoT, as well as between their own TOI% and those two stats. This should give you some insight into how they have been deployed by their coaches. Remember that this is not a measure of player quality.
So enjoy this! And look forward to the new roster builder, which will be released on April 2nd, as well as some other new dashboards.
