NEW PERK: Interactive 2021-22 Goalie Stats Dashboard (Patreon)
Content
Happy Monday everybody - it's time to keep the new visualizations coming with some goalie data!
Here is the link to this new dashboard!
This dashboard (set to update daily) visualizes TopDownHockey's top-of-the-line goaltending analytics, including Goals Saved Above Expected and Start Types, in a series of easy-to-navigate tabs.
For those who aren't familiar, Goals Saved Above Expected is the gold standard of modern goalie stats. It uses mountains of past data to assess the quality of all the chances that a goalie has faced and estimate how many goals an average netminder would have allowed with the same workload. The difference between the two numbers gives us the numbers of goals the goalie in question has saved above what would be expected of an average goaltender.
The first two tabs present this number both as a season total and per 60 minutes.
The second tab, a graph, compares a goalie's goals saved above expected to his workload in the form of expected goals against per 60.
The final tab, one I haven't included before, shows start types. This method, adapted from Rob Vollman's "quality start" metric that used save percentage, classifies every start into four possible bins:
- A really good start is one in which a goaltender prevented 2+ goals above expected
- A quality start is one in which a goaltender prevented 0.1-1.9 goals above expected
- A non-quality start is one in which a goaltender allowed 0.1-1.9 goals above expected
- A really bad start is one in which a goaltender allowed 2+ goals above expected
I hope you guys enjoy, and look forward to Quality of Competition and Team Visualizations coming soon!
Cheers,
Jack
