Let's take a brief break from the WAR to see what in my mind are some of the most important stats to understand out there: on-ice finishing and goaltending.

This new Tableau dashboard includes 10 visualizations that you everything you need to know about every player's puck luck, bounces, unsustainable results, etc. Including a number of stats that aren't available anywhere else! All of these are filterable by game situation, player, position, time-on-ice, team, and even division.

1. On-Ice Finishing vs. Goaltending

This scatter plot shows a player's on-ice goals above expected per 60 minutes graphed against their on-ice goals saved above expected per 60 - this means you can see who's getting finishing and goaltending on their side.

2. Linemate Finishing vs. Goaltending

This is an important bit of precision - this filters out a player's own individual goals above expected from the conversation, so you're only seeing how their linemates (player on their own team on the ice at the same time) are finishing.

3. Individual Finishing

This shows a player's own total goals scored above expected.

4. Individual Finishing per 60

Same as above but per 60 minutes instead of total.

5. On-Ice Finishing

Shows a player's on-ice goals scored above expected

6. On-Ice Finishing per 60

Shows a player's on-ice goals scored above expected per 60

7. On-Ice Goaltending

Shows a player's on-ice goals saved above expected

8. On-Ice Goaltending per 60

Shows a player's on-ice goals saved above expected per 60

9. Linemate Finishing

Shows a player's linemate goals scored above expected

10. Linemate Finishing

Shows a player's linemate goals scored above expected per 60.

I reference these numbers very very frequently and I can't emphasize enough how useful they are when assessing a player's true impact and trying to understand things like point totals and plus/minus. I hope this will be as useful a reference for you as it has been for me.

Up next, Classic Player Cards. Sit tight!
