I already mentioned how I build volume for my advanced paintings in a previous post: https://www.patreon.com/posts/42725189

This time I'll try to describe a lot more easier method and process that I use to rendering drawings: Cell–Shading. This shading style is very popular among artists since it can be used to give an anime or cartoon look to pictures (example drawings done with this style are my Fidget, Leafeon and Gatomon drawings).

In the graphic, as usual I put on the left an example of the Airbrush method (something usually done when one start learning painting) and on the right the suggested Cell-shading method to use instead: This is because to paint shadows and lights correctly you need a combination of hard edges and soft transitions. This is something that you can't do with the airbrush tool but with a cell-shading style can be done easily in many stylized ways. For this I use a basic semi hard edged round brush like the one shown.

Note. Most of the time, what I'm doing for most paintings is combine this cell-shading method mixed with the one shown in the My Realistic Technique graphic. Example drawings using an intermediate shading level like this are Waai Fu and some of the Yuki and Ruki pics.
