I disagree. This whole episode is a part of the plot in that it shows you what addicts go through to avoid withdrawal. It may not be enjoyable to watch but it is definitely necessary. Also, Laurie (i think that's her name) manipulated Rue. Remember, she told Rue at the start that she always makes her money back. I believe that's why she didn't give Rue any pills and instead opted to drug her and get her money back with Rue's unconscious body. Dark but believable. Shaking, yawning, body aches, body shakes, and vomiting are all signs of withdrawal too. Just an fyi :)

Laurie was definitely trying to sell Rue. It says there were scratching noises behind that locked door. She talks about selling Rue...she even opened the door and used Rue's full, government issued name. She also has parrots, which are often used by people who traffic humans to explain weird voices/noises coming from places. She also poked Rue many times to make her arm extremely bruised so if Rue got away and went to the police she would seem like she was just very high. Rue lied to Laurie and told her she took less than she usually did, which is why, even though Laurie gave her a high dosage Rue still woke up. Her lie saved her this time. Apparently the bathroom scene was supposed to be much more graphic with her grooming Rue, but the actress said she couldn't do that and hoped they could convey just how life or death that situation was without that extra part. She knew Rue was an addict and gave her that suitcase knowing Rue wouldn't be able to pay her back. $10k is nothing for this woman. She's so terrifying.

One of the best episodes of the show. Zendaya is ready for that Emmy.

Her first one is getting lonely, haha. I truly hope she wins another...even the first 15 minutes of this episode must've been absolutely exhausting mentally and physically.

I agree. I wrote a long comment below, but Laurie knew Rue would never be able to pay her back. She also had that suitcase full of pills, but chose to give Rue the morphine. There was definitely someone in that locked room and if Rue hadn't lied to Laurie and said she normally takes less than her real dosage Rue wouldn't have woken up so soon and it's scary to think just what would've happened. If you don't know someone and they open the door and know your government name....you should leave. I understand Rue wasn't in any state to do any logical thinking, but as a viewer that whole scene was terrifying. I'm so thankful to the older actress for telling the director to tone it down. She could convey how scary it was without us seeing her do...things to Rue that would get her ready to be sold and would've just been, IMO, too much to watch. I think she definitely got across being horrifying without us having to see her grooming Rue.

This^ Well said! One question that always comes back to me is how much time passed between when she was drugged and when she woke up. Like it could've been the next day but I don't think that they really confirmed it which leaves the audience wondering. Great post x

This is the most anxious I’ve felt watching TV I’m pretty sure, at least in recent memory. Just hand her the Emmy, no need for the awards ceremony lol

Kaly

i mean yeah we love the drama but this was the best episode! showing us her lowest point and how far she is willing to go! I Zen fucking killed it

The opening scene is so important and so powerful. She wasn't losing it for "no reason." Oftentimes, interventions for drug addicts are considerably downplayed in shows. The creators mentioned that they really wanted to portray the reality of attempting to help an addict. They get aggressive. And it can get violent. Yes, Rue was worried about losing the suitcase, but I definitely think she would have reacted the same way with or without it being gone. We hate to hear Rue like this, but there is truth in saying that it's the drugs speaking. It's something that Jules understood which is why she didn't respond to Rue negatively despite what was said. I've had family members with addiction problems. Forcing an addict that isn't looking for help to get better is an incredibly difficult and dangerous thing. Social commentary aside, Zendaya was absolutely AMAZING in this episode. In terms of characters I really don't like after this season, Cassie definitely takes the crown for sure. Rue ends up being my third favorite with Lexi and Fez being my top 2. Anyway, I do disagree with the take on this being the worst episodes. One of my personal favorites of the series. I think the user Gambit did a pretty good job at explaining my own feelings about this episode. This episode also did tie for second-best review score out of season 2. With episode 1 being the highest.

You want more Kat… be careful what you wish for lol 😆

I hope ep 6 is out soon!! Looking forward to it :)

Again, good episode, but sooooo much fat should have been cut out. Watching Zendaya act is amazing, but this episode really started dragging at the halfway point.

idk maybe it's zendaya's acting but this is one of my favourite episodes. I think this season kinda felt flat in certain moments or with characters like kat in later episodes but these moments really do it for me and show how good this show is
