Food for (scary) thought: The entire time Cell was fighting Vegeta and Trunks, he didn't even bother powering up. That was a faction of what he's capable of.

It's a callback to Popo training Krillin, Tien, Chiaotzu and Yamcha. First rule of Popo's training: Do not talk about Popo's training. Second rule of Popo's training: Do not talk about Popo's training. (Repeated as a Fight Club reference)

6th Rule Of Popo's Training: Don't break his stuff. Remember, Goku was trained by Popo when he was a kid. This was referenced once in Season One, then one last time in a throwaway line this season when Popo mentioned throwing Goku into the Time Chamber once. It's pretty easy to miss on a first viewing, but yeah. Back in Season One Krillin once started rambling off Popo's rules after Gohan asked how his training for the saiyans went, the only one we hear is "First Rule Of Popo's Training: Do not talk about Popo's training" Meanwhile, Ultra Saiyan! The form as so many names. Ultra Saiyan, Ultra Super Saiyan, Ascended Super Saiyan, USSJ if you want brownie points in the parts of the community that insist on calling it by the Japanese term "Saiyan-jin", but I just call it Ultra Saiyan for convenience. It is only ever used in this fight and never again outside of a brief reference in Super. Yeah, ki can be redirected into the body's mass to amplify a saiyan's power. There really is no limit to juicing like this, but only experienced veterans like Goku and Vegeta would understand the form's downsides. Vegeta used a measured amount against Cell, hence his bulging muscles. But Trunks, not knowing those downsides, went all-in and made himself strong enough to actually hit and hurt Cell... When Cell was feeling pity for Trunks and basically just stood there letting him land those punches. The major crux of that interaction is seeing just how much communication and team building Goku and Gohan are doing against how distant Trunks and Vegeta were, with Vegeta almost completely refusing to assist Trunks with training whatsoever outside of some key few moments. Trunks is often poked at by the community for forever being dealt a shitty hand and being forced to just run with it, struggling to have any true moments to shine outside of his introduction. A man plagued forever with terrible luck and misfortune, but still fights on in an effort to change everything for the better.

This episode has probably my favorite dialogue in DBZA, the "Dead men" line is just perfect. Also the music that plays at the start of the fight is a remix of Trunks' original japanese theme

The Dead Men line is by far my favorite line in the whole show. Scott came up with that one, and Curtis's delivery is so cold, it's just amazing. Bethany talked about Trunks's Rollercoaster of emotions the past couple of episodes, but you guys should speak for yourselves. Watching the two fo you laugh, get hyped, and get bummed while still laughing is an absolute treat to watch.

Phenomenal fight, music, and episode! What Vegeta achieved in the chamber is SSJ Grade 2 and it’s basically confirmed that he can hit Grade 3 but chose not to. He realized that form consumes too much Ki, strains the body, and slows you down too much. Of course, he never shared that info with his son so Trunks just believed he was stronger. In terms of raw power, Trunks had Cell beat but it didn't matter since Cell was faster. Goku also achieved both forms but, like Vegeta, didn’t bother with Grade 3. It really does suck for Trunks that no one’s around to train with him in the future, he’s the last Saiyan and doesn’t have the resources to improve his fighting like the others can.

I love the different takes here at the end by both of them as to what it takes to beat cell. I love how the idea of quantity against Cell would totally work, but would never happen, because saiyans are basically egotistical maniacs when it comes to fighting and sharing a victory over a strong opponent would border on dishonor. especially for someone even more traditional and conservative like vegeta

Wooo the music during trunk & cell fight gave me chills! Which I know it’s remix version of Trunks theme
