This episode, to me, highlights one of the biggest failures of RWBY. They don't give information that the audience needs to be able to understand some of the characters without having to go somewhere else. Just a brief explanation of Ironwood's semblance goes a long way to understanding why he does what he does. I still think he's a nationalist ass hat, but I understand why for some of it.

Agreed. There is a bunch of canonical content outside of the show itself (books, manga, games, spin-offs). RWBY often makes the mistake of revealing details in this other content, while leaving it out of the original show. They do get better with this in the future (I'm not going to give details, as that would be a spoiler), but as of right now, it's a completely legitimate criticism of the show.
