Man, Winamp 2.91 (or similar). That brings back really, really good memories.

Does mp3 encode each channel seperately, or does it encode one side as differences against the other? The latter would be smaller but more variable I guess.

Usually you can choose how you want stereo material encoded -- standard stereo mode will encode each channel independently, while "joint" stereo does as you said, encode one channel as the difference from the other. Other than differing sizes, I've read that joint stereo can produce slightly narrower stereo separation, but I think that starts to get into splitting hairs.
