M1 MBPs can charge from either port. What I've run into is worn out or bent USB-C cables that don't connect properly and it doesn't negotiate a charge. Would recommend testing with your original power supply and power cable (if you still have them). I've also had (weaker) third party power supplies not able to keep up under high load, where things either won't charge or will discharge very slowly, and this was the case on Intel machines too.

Girlfriend confirmed that both ports of her M1 MBP charge it.

I've had my M1 air since November and it charges from both ports just fine. I think it might be an issue with your device. for clarity i use apple, and third party supplies without problem
