I picked up one of Apple's first laptops, a PowerBook 170, that was  mostly complete with its original box. And while it doesn't appear to  have suffered any abuse, the past 30 years have still taken their toll.

I like both formats, and I trust you to decide when it's better to use which. I'm sorry it's not helpful maybe, but you really are a better judge for this than we are. Ultimately, we just love to hear your take on things, no matter the subject.

So what do you use to replace that old hard drive for something more modern if you wanted to use something like this as a daily driver for stuff like writing?

There are two options on the market right now -- the SCSI2SD and the BlueSCSI. Both will replace the original SCSI drive with a modern PCB that accepts an SD card for storage. The SCSI2SD offers more features than the BlueSCSI, but the latter seems to be undergoing much more rapid community development so I think they'll both be equal options in short order.
