I used to enjoy flying my DJI Spark...until the FAA decided that hobbyists were the enemy.

My first one was a Phantom 3 and now I have a Mavic Pro (? - whatever the first one is, lol). I've flown it less than 10-15 times in the 2+ years that I've had it. And it's honestly because it's just SO much work to know where it's safe/legal/allowed to do so! Of all the times I've flown at all with either drone, most of them have been in the immediate vicinity of my house so that no one bothers me. It sucks that it's become such a "thing" because creating beautiful imagery while flying in a safe and respectful manner is not hard to do, especially with a little practice! It's really a shame. Like any other hobby, it's always the "doot-da-doots" as we call them over here that ruin it for everyone. "Yo, bro, check out this new drone I got and don't know how to use! I'm gonna fly it over a crowded beach to check out chicks, bro!" The Remote ID thing seems to be easy enough to solve with the Internet connection that you described, and I was actually thinking about it before you said it. I would think most/many pilots use their smartphone to fly with, at least with the DJI models, so the connectivity is already there. The app is aware of the drone's GPS location as well as the controller's, and the phone's if you'll allow it. If you're flying in an area without cellular coverage, chances are it's remote enough to not bother anyone so you'd probably be in the clear anyway. Oh well, hopefully we can enjoy them for the next 20 months before the proverbial shit hits the fan.

I've had a number of drones, got the original Phantom 1, upgraded to the Phantom 3 pro (which is still a great unit), bought a Mavic Air to have a more portable device for travel and most recently got a Mavic Mini (the first of the smaller ones) When I saw the new DJI Mini, I was pretty much geared up to buy one, but then considered how much value am I going to get going forward. The old P3 will just run standalone*, but the newer ones require you to "login" to unlock anything other than basically hover 30M away which was a big barrier. Australian rules haven't changed much but certain descriptions have, "populated places" used to be defined with common sense, such as " crowded beach" "sports oval with a game in progress" but another page states "anywhere where it could fall and damage property" There is talk of new stringent rules coming into place this year and I fear it'll favour the commercial operators. I do beleive that a short education and test should be needed to perhaps "activate" the craft, but once this is done, it's done. * My P3 is running hacked firmware to remove some restrictions like 500m from take-off location (Rules allow it to be taken up a mountain but firmware prevented this) , increased the descent speed and maximum drone speed. (I left the prohibited take-off spaces in though) Ironically a few months later, a rescue chopper appeared and went to land in park I was flying drone in, my drone crashed into the ground, but this may have saved the pilots lives.
