In the early 1990's, there was an industry trend to make laptops smaller and lighter. These so-called subnotebooks often resulted in a compromise between portability and practicality. Apple's PowerBook Duo series, however, tried to do everything.

Hey Colin, fantastic documentary. I need your advice about installing System 7.5 - 9.1 on a PowerBook 1400CS. Barring on telling me where to find a copy of the OS, are you installing it via the floppy drive? Is that the best way? With my restoration projects on a PowerBook G4 Aluminium and MacBook 2007, I was able to create a bootable USB, Target Disk Mode, or use CD's and DVDs. I'm struggling to find the best method on doing a fresh install on the older laptops though, which only have a floppy disk drive (I don't have the CR-ROM module). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Great video, Collin. I also love seeing these old docking stations. To this day, I still miss the feeling of docking in my ThinkPad with a good old clunk.

I try to reinstall from a CD whenever possible, usually because that leads to more options and it's also far faster and more convenient. The PB 1400 had the option for a CD-ROM drive, so in your case it may be worth trying to find one. What I did with both of the Duos was to hook up an external SCSI CD-ROM drive, which could be a good option for you too (and would also be handy to have for other machines that never offered internal optical drives).
