Epic Games has laid down the gauntlet and challenged the behemoths of the smartphone industry -- Apple and Google -- over their app store royalties. What's this all about, does Epic stand a chance at winning, and are these walled-garden product ecosystems as bad as they claim they are?

The cut the App Store takes is more of a problem for low-margin purchases like subscriptions. In those cases they generally either force you to sign up in a browser or charge you extra. I do think it’s fair to ask whether 30% is appropriate, at the very least. Obviously the App Store requires some money for upkeep and management, but I suspect the break-even percentage would be considerably lower than 30%.
