Despite our increasing dependence on their products, why do technology companies treat their customers so poorly?

The amount of telemetry Teslas send back to home base must be staggering. I feel like the day is coming soon when i won't be able to buy a new car that won't be phoneing home. Does anyone else think a car should be treated in the same way as supposed "disposable appliances" like a phone?

To be fair, most cars are treated that way because most car owners know jack squat when it comes to maintenance. But some brands (FCA, Nissan, GM, etc.) are known to build crappy cars that fall apart. However, Honda, Lexus and Toyota vehicles hold their value insanely well due to their reliability track record.

The problem is these days as you alluded to, the customer is the shareholder not the "consumer". A term I dislike is "consumer", as you are just there to consume what is put in front of you, after that they just don't care. Its why loyalty to any corporation should be as deep as their loyalty to you. If Apple is giving you a bad deal, leave em. Microsoft double dipping by selling your data and you software? leave em. Thing is easier said than done.
